It is my pleasure, as the Teacher In-charge, to place before you, the salient features of our illustrious college. Established in 1948 and affiliated to the University of Calcutta, Fakir Chand college is situated on the left bank of river Hooghly in salubrious surroundings, free from the din and bustle of urban life. The ambiance is highly suited to serve the noble and needs of higher education. The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1977 befitting its reputation as a Centre of Excellence in south 24 parganas district.
Located amidst fabulous greenery and a pollution-free environment, the college is housed in spacious buildings having bright and airy classrooms.
The college has a history of being served by and able administrators with active from the Teaching and non-teaching staff.
The faculty is highly motivated, staffed by teachers having research experience at both the national and international levels. The educational and emotional needs of students, keeping in view their rural background, are well taken care of .Utmost care is taken to cater to the needs of each and every students to his/her immediate and future professional requirements.
Accordingly, a number of modern subjects have been introduced to keep pace with the new trends of globalization.
The college has a computerized library with books (more than 20,000) in various disciplines, taken care of by an energetic librarian and supporting staff.
The Science Faculties have well-equipped laboratories and computer facilities able to cater to the needs Of the students thereby facilitating the learning process.
Students have access to medical care under the aegis of the Calcutta University’s students Health Care Scheme. For recreational need , the college has separate common rooms for boys and girls, extra curricular activities like sports and games. As a tradition of social obligations, the College often organizes blood donation camps and other social activities. A canteen has been set up to provide healthy and nourishing food at a reasonable price.
The college also has N.C.C. and four N.S.S. units approved by the Calcutta University and dedicated to social work.
We are proud to state that the Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) has opened it’s study centre at Fakir Chand College offering B.A.(H), B.Com(H) and M.A./M.Sc. courses of studies. The Indira Gandhi National Oopen University also has opened a Study Centre in the college to offer courses in BPP, B.Com, B.Ed., BCA, MCA, M.A. (in English & History), M.Com., PGDHE, PGDESD, CIT etc.
We have a B.Ed. section for regular B.Ed. course under the University of Calcutta, which has been running successfully since 1966.
The College authority is going to extend the hostel facilities for the girl students very soon.
In the year 2005, the College has started Calcutta University affiliated Post Graduate Course in Education. This was a longdrawn demand of the district. An illustrious inaugural ceremony was organized in the College on 5th October 2005. The programme got a new dimension by the presence of the then Hon’ble minister for Higher Education, Prof. Satyasadhan Chakraborty, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Calcutta University, Prof. Ashish Kr. Banerjee, Pro-vice Chancellor, Prof. Suranjan Das and so many other educationists.
During the academic session 2008-09, the college started M.A. Course in Bengali under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta. Later on, the College has introduced PG Courses in Modern History & Commerce from the academic year 2012-13. From the academic year 2015-16, Post Graduate course in mathematics has started under the same affiliation. Much has been done, yet, still much more is needed to be done. The College is ready to be a partner-in-progress, provided all of us contribute wholeheartedly to its well-being. So let us strive for the best that could be had from our College.
